What drove father who built the House of Horror?

(CNN) -- As the world reacts with shock to the news that a man held his daughter captive for 24 years and fathered her seven children, police, medical professionals and those who know Josef Fritzl have begun to piece together just what sort of man he is.

What is evident is that Fritzl, a 73-year-old retired electrician was somehow able to lead a double life for more than two decades. At his home on Ybbsstrasse in the quiet town of Amstetten, east of Vienna, he lived with his wife Rosemarie and their three children. But with them also lived three of the children Fritzl fathered by his daughter Elisabeth, imprisoned in a basement dungeon with another three of the children she bore after being raped by her father.

Fritzl told his wife that his missing daughter had dropped the unwanted children off at the house because she could not take care of them, police said, forcing his daughter to write letters to strengthen his case.

It was a deception he maintained from 1984 until just days ago.
Police spokesman Franz Polzer said that Rosemarie Fritzl was unaware of the deception. "Let me also add that we know the suspect not only possessed an increased sexual potency, he's also very dynamic, imperious and quite authoritarian in his conduct and relationship to his existing family," Polzer told a news conference Monday.

Polzer added that Fritzl made clear to his wife and the children living with them that the basement area was out of bounds. He bought food for his captives and took it to them in evening.

Medical professionals have also offered their interpretations of the character of Fritzl. Clinical psychologist Dr. Kristina Downing-Orr told CNN: "What is chilling about this case is the cold, sociopathic detachment that Josef F[ritzl] went through year after year, decades even, to hide his crimes.

"It was as if there was no remorse, no empathy for his daughter, for his grandchildren, for his wife. That's what's chilling." She said that Fritzl, who his daughter has said abused him since the age of 11, possibly didn't want the relationship to end when she turned 18 -- the age at which he first imprisoned her. "Perhaps she would go out and have boyfriends of her own," Downing-Orr told CNN, "perhaps he was a bit afraid he would be caught, that she would go out and tell people, and that led him to imprison her in this dungeon basement."

"It's that chilling sociopathic methodology, that kind of logic, that I find particularly chilling. But fortunately it's very rare, we rarely see that kind of behavior." Meanwhile Austrian psychiatrist Reinhard Haller told The Associated Press: "This man must have been insane and must have felt he was far superior to others." Haller added that the retired electrician seemed to have a pronounced narcissism and desire to wield control that might go some way to explaining why the imprisonment of her daughter and children carried on for so long.

Meanwhile Sigrun Rossmanith, a court psychiatrist, said in comments reported by AP that Fritzl consisted of two personalities, "the underground one, and the one that existed above." "If someone has power and forces it on someone else, then his word is like the word of God," added Rossmanith.

CNN's Phil Black, reporting from Amstetten, said: "People here say this is difficult to understand or accept because their [the Fritzls reputation in this community was as the kindly grandparents for taking in these children and raising them."

A woman in Amstetten , identified only as Gabriele H., told Austria's Kurier newspaper she thought Fritzl was a devoted grandfather doing his best to look after his abandoned grandchildren, "one who looks after their grandchildren whilst their mother just ran away. We were all asking ourselves what kind of mother would do that to their children?," she said.

"Mr. Fritzl and I grew up together" Erika Manhalter, who lives a few meters away from the Fritzl home, told Kurier. "We thought this would be a family just like others, but you cannot look through people." Fritzl "was friendly -- that's why this is so unbelievable," Franz Redl, 56, who owns a shop across the street, told The Associated Press. "I'm sure the authorities did all they could. He planned everything so perfectly."

From Fritzl himself there has been no word on why he did what he did. At a news conference Monday, police said they were currently only interested in the facts of the case. Rudolf Mayer, Fritzl's lawyer, asked if his client had demonstrated any regret, said in comments reported by AP: "I cannot say at this point."

Austrian family members in incest-imprisonment case meet

AMSTETTEN, Austria - Members of the Austrian family victimized by a man who imprisoned his daughter for 24 years and fathered seven children with her have had an "astonishing" meeting, officials said Tuesday. Authorities said the daughter, most of her children whom suspect Josef Fritzl fathered through incest, and Fritzl's wife met each other Sunday morning at a clinic where they have been getting psychiatric treatment and counseling. "It was astonishing how easily it happened — how the mother and grandmother came together," clinic director Berthold Kepplinger told reporters Tuesday. Kepplinger said the family members interacted very naturally — even though the three children who lived upstairs with the grandparents had never met their siblings in the windowless cell.

Officials said one of the children who is receiving medical treatment at another hospital was not part of the gathering. Word of the reunion came as police announced that DNA tests confirmed Fritzl is the biological father of the six surviving children he had with his daughter. Police also said they combed through Fritzl's other properties but found no other hidden windowless cells like the one where he had held his daughter — now 42 — captive since she was 18. Police said Fritzl confessed Monday to holding the daughter captive, sexually abusing her, fathering her children and tossing the body of one child who died in infancy into a furnace. Officials had said Fritzl faces up to 15 Shocked angry1 years in prison if charged, tried and convicted on rape charges, the most grave of his alleged offenses under Austrian law.

But prosecutors in Lower Austria said Tuesday they were looking into the possibility of charging Fritzl with "murder through failure to act" in connection with the infant death. Murder in Austria is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Investigators say they believe his wife, with whom he had seven children, was unaware that the daughter she believed ran away to join a religious cult in 1984 was living as a prisoner beneath her feet. Fritzl's lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, said his client also was under psychiatric care and "is really hit by this. He is very serious, but he is emotionally broken." But prosecutor Gerhard Sedlacek said Fritzl was "completely calm, completely without emotion" when he was formally placed in pretrial detention Tuesday.

Austria is still scandalized by a 2006 case involving a girl who was kidnapped and imprisoned in a basement outside Vienna for more than eight years, and residents of Amstetten were puzzled as to how the Fritzl case could go undetected for so long. "How is it possible that no one knew anything for 24 years?" asked Anita Fabian, a teacher in Amstetten. "This was not possible without accomplices." Regarding the apartment building that Fritzl owned and lived in, the town's authorities authorized the construction of an addition with a basement in 1978, city spokesman Hermann Gruber told the Austria Press Agency. He said inspectors examined the project in 1983 — the year before the young woman went missing — and nothing looked suspicious.

Police said the surviving children are three boys and three girls, ranging in age from 5 to 19. Officials said three of the secret children — aged 19, 18 and 5 — "never saw sunlight" until they were freed a few days ago. Police released several photos showing parts of the cramped basement cell, with a narrow passageway leading to a tiny bedroom. Investigators said an electronic keyless-entry system apparently kept them from escaping.
Three of the children lived with the grandparents. Fritzl and his wife registered those children with authorities, saying that they had found them outside their home in 1993, 1994 and 1997.

Leopold Etz, a regional police official, told APA that Fritzl apparently chose which of the children would live upstairs with him and his wife according to whether they were angry1 "crybabies." Officials said social workers made regular visits to the family but found nothing out of the ordinary, reporting that Fritzl's wife was attentive, the three children were doing well in school and clubs, and that all of them played musical instruments. The case unfolded after the eldest of the secret children, a 19-year-old woman, was found unconscious and gravely ill on April 19 in the building and was taken to a hospital. Hospital officials said the 19-year-old remained in critical condition Tuesday because of the effects of lack of oxygen, and was undergoing dialysis.

Amstetten Mayor Herbert Katzengrueber told the AP in an interview that Fritzl was personable and well-liked, and that the town had honored the suspect and his wife in 2006 for their 50th wedding anniversary. Katzengrueber said he was at a loss to explain how such an atrocity could happen. "No one can really explain it," he said. "I am appalled and saddened that such a thing could happen in my hometown. ... These have been awful and sad days."

Austrians question cellar captive

Police say Fritzl has admitted imprisoning and raping his daughter

Legal authorities in Austria have begun questioning Elisabeth Fritzl, the woman who was held captive in a cellar for 24 years by her father, Josef.
The questioning involved a doctor to determine how one of the seven babies she was forced to bear by her father had died, said the prosecutor's office.
Mr Fritzl confessed to incinerating the body of the dead baby, officials say.
Formal charges against Josef Fritzl may be ready within a few months - allowing a trial to start later this year.
The interview was being filmed so that Elisabeth Fritzl will not have to give evidence in person in court, officials said.
It is not clear how long the questioning will last or where it is taking place.
Possible murder charge
Mr Fritzl is being held in pre-trial detention in St Poelten, 80 km (50 miles) west of the capital, Vienna.
His alleged victims, including Elisabeth, 42, are undergoing treatment at a psychiatric hospital.
Elisabeth and her cildren spent years in a windowless cellar

Prosecutors say Mr Fritzl has confessed to keeping his daughter captive in a cell at his home in Amstetten, where he says he had seven children with her.
Three of the children were confined to the cellar, three were raised above ground, and one died in infancy, officials say.
Mr Fritzl confessed to disposing of the child's corpse - a twin born in 1997 - and could face murder charges if he is found responsible for the death, officials say.
DNA tests have shown he is the father of Elisabeth's six surviving children.
The case first came to light after Kerstin, one of the children fathered by Mr Fritzl, became seriously ill and was taken to hospital.
Unable to find any medical records, they appealed for the teenager's mother to come forward.
At that point Mr Fritzl released Elisabeth, who then explained the story to police.
Kerstin was finally reunited with her family after coming out of a coma earlier this month. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Dang, I was following this ridiculous story when it first came out, but I never kept up with the updates. I really don't have any words for how messed up and horrendous this is. Not seeing sunlight in 24 years? Grandfather being the father? Burning a baby in the oven? Confined in that tiny space? The mother not knowing a thing? All of this is too much for me to understand. It's so sick and twisted. He completely damaged that whole family.

I heard some of the kids didn't even know how to speak properly. He had them just living like wild animals down there. angry1 angry1

UPDATE:

Austria: Dungeon man faces slavery charge

  • Story Highlights
  • Josef Fritzl may be charged with slavery after holding daughter captive for 24 years
  • Fritzl has admitted taking daughter Elisabeth prisoner when she was 18
  • He has also admitted fathering seven children with her

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- A prosecutor says Josef Fritzl, the man who held his daughter captive for 24 years in a cellar and fathered seven children with her, may be charged with slavery.

St. Poelten prosecutor Gerhard Sedlacek also says authorities hope to have formal charges -- likely to include a series of crimes -- ready by the end of September and that a trial would likely begin in December.

Investigators say Fritzl confessed to taking his daughter Elisabeth prisoner when she was 18, sexually abusing her and fathering seven children with her, including one whose body he allegedly tossed into a furnace. They say subsequent DNA tests confirmed he is the surviving children's biological father.
