Toe“Value-neutrality” is a familiar precept that belongs to the natural, physical, and applied sciences, but not necessarily to the social worlds of subjective human experiences. And the idea that one can feign neutrality on issues of values and social conditions simply to appear impartial and balanced has no real place in honest and objective social empiricism. Of all the contributions of feminists’ theories to contemporary social thoughts, which all research students are expected to at least know, I’ve come to admire the incisive criticism of positivist notions of “value-free” neutrality the most – that a “strong objectivity” is what is desired in highly subjective social worlds, and not necessarily neutrality.
