For well over two decades, Sub-Saharan Africans have been fighting the insidious spread of HIV with everything from latex condoms and faith-based programs to an array of drug cocktails, yet the disease has continued unabated. Now, an unorthodox prevention method shows promise. Health care providers and HIV experts are putting their hopes in a mundane and low cost, but powerful weapon against new infections: male circumcision.

what is interesting about this article is the total lack of recognition of the fact that global stats present HIV as a feminised disease, esp in sub-Saharan Africa. obama better improve on george bush PEPFAR nonsense!

feminised in terms of the percentage of women (young too) infected; the level of vulnerability for women; the level of sexual violence and other forms of gender-based violence and the probability of women vs men infection due to women's physiological presentation.

initially, they thot homosexual, drug users, it think hatians( something about the 4 Hs. now they know better. homosexuals, if they use protection (condoms) may be as vulnerable as a heterosexual couple.

so the emphasis on male circumcision has been an emerging discussion that has undermined the issues around condom use. circumcised men, esp in east africa believe that they are free of HIV and can never get infected once they are circumcised-serious problem.
