There is a Liberian facing a dilemma and I want to share his story with you all in order to solicit your opinion and suggestions. Two days ago, I received a call from one of my former college roommates and longtime friend who happens to be a lawyer. He called me because the law firm he works for has assigned to him a case of a young Liberian man (30yrs) who happens to be facing statutory rape charges. I was one of the first persons he called since he knows my Liberian background/connections. The accused in question impregnated (he admitted) a fellow Liberian girl who is supposedly a minor. According to him, the girl is his longtime girlfriend from back in Liberia and not a minor. She and her family had to falsify her immigration/resettlement papers in order to make her a minor child to boost her eligibility to travel with her parents to the US on the resettlement program. They were among the very last group who came before the resettlement program was discontinued. According to the guy, the girl is in her late twenty but he papers list her as a minor. The guy was arrested after she filled in some paperwork for request for free medical care from one of the hospitals and listed the guy as the father, and also listed his date of birth and address (he’s 30, she’s under 17). The hospital called child protective service who investigated the case and temporarily removed her from her home and informed the police who arrested the guy. Anyway, all efforts by the boyfriend/accused to convince her to tell the truth has been useless because her parents have been pushing her not to disclose her real age to prosecutors for fear that could be used against her (and probably the parents) by immigration to deport them for lying on their immigration papers. The girl doesn’t want to see the guy go to jail but at the same time if she decides to come clean, she will have to swear under oath that she is in fact in her late twenties and not a minor, which COULD be bad for her. Now this dude is in prison facing years in prison and deportation since he is still on TPS. My boy (the lawyer) wants me to come and talk to the girl (she is always at the jail to see the dude) but I told him if her boyfriend cannot convince her to tell the truth, how the hell can I talk to her when she doesn’t even know me and my Liberian English is bad (he said they only speak Liberian English). What do you guys think I can do to help this case, or what do you think needs to be done to help this guy? My boy is a lawyer and knows what to do to argue his case but I am sure he will appreciate any help I can give him.

The couple were stupid not to plan the whole thing. They will suffer for that. Thanks for sharing...

Plenty Liberian guys will go to jail for this.....

This is pure stupidness on her part. You know how you came here and that should ALWAYS be in the back of your mind. That is the FIRST thing dey people dem can ask you when you filling out any kind of paper work..what is your name, age, date of birth and SS#. So how in the hell did she forget.....this is just messed up....and since he's on TPS he will be deported.

I know black don't crack, but that is such a huge gap in age....late 20's to 17
