| I found this story to be really touching, it focuses on education for little black kids and features a 10 year old kid name Eric Kennedy, Jr. He is so smart and is being pay alone with some of his classmate by a Harvard University Economist Roland Fryer for making good grades. He has an account and said that he is saving his money for college and to give half of his savings to his dad to help pay off some of their bills. He is in the 4th grade and has change school 5 times already because of his dad low income. His dad is a single parent and is taking care of him and his sister. He is working part-time in order to spend the rest of his time in bring up his kids. They had been asked to move from the house they presently occupied within 3 months. Eric said that Fryer program is a means of encouraging them to do more work and it is not ruining the chances of getting good grades. He said that Fryer is not paying them to learn but rather hiring them.
Fryer said that he is convince that he can close the gaps between white and black kids by paying kids in the poor black neighborhood to learn. He said that they can get up to $25,000 for each good exam score and that is $250 for each perfect test score. According to him, whenever you see look into a 4th grader between ages 9-10 years, all you can see is opportunity and this is the opportunity he wants to give to those smart deserving kids to brighten their futures. |

| | Fryer has a decent idea but unfortunately, he is unable to affect the kind of situation the vast majortiy of Black and Brown kids in American find themselves in: horribly under-resourced and over-segregated schools with out-of-field teachers. |

I because in America once you have 1/4 black blood in you, you are considered black. _________________ ["Don't let the world completely dominate how you shape and pursue your interests. Regret is an ugly and debilitating emotion. Do you today!" a friend |

I agree with you T. When I used to teach I realized how underserved blacks are in this country. One of my students, who was a wonderful student told me how he used to raise his hand in class at his other school and the white students never used to call on him. He stopped asking questions in class and fell behind on his work. When he came to my school I was very hard on him but also engaged him in learning. _________________ ["Don't let the world completely dominate how you shape and pursue your interests. | | Ensure that you resource and funding equity among schools; get highly qualified teachers in the classroom and support them with LOTS of professional development; make sure all your teachers are teaching an academic subject in which they have been trained; organize your school so that it actively encourages parental involvement; ensure that all kids have access to RIGOROUS coursework.....do all that and you WON'T have to pay kids to learn. |

I think what you've statesd is a great blueprint for success. Paying kids to go to or stay in school just feeds into what I feel s a major problem with not only our black youth but youth in general. Thy tend not to want to worl for anything unless they see an immediate prize.
I have a cousin who works for an organization funded by the people who own Outback Restaurants. They have a program that gives(African American) sudents a full four year scholarship to attend the college they are accepted in. All they have to do is stay in the program. The program provides mentorship and counseling and tutorial assistance.
The problem is, they can't keep the kids in the program. They will not stay the course long enough to receive a full paid entrance into college. Come on now...what's wrong with this picture? _________________ There is a higher road that leads to higher heights. |
